2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System Act, signed into law by President Johnson on October 2, 1968. Help honor this special anniversary by planning for your National Trails Day events, which will be celebrated this year on Saturday, June 2nd.
The goals for this annual celebration include:
- Promoting public awareness of our trails and how the various uses can be part of a healthy lifestyle
- Encouraging cooperative efforts among different trail users
- Enlisting volunteers for trail projects
To assist in the promotion of your event, the New Jersey Recreational Trails Program will be compiling a list of events for National Trails Day, which will be happening throughout New Jersey on public and private trails. The information will be distributed through a press release, their web site and mailings, and sent to state parks and forests for public distribution. In addition, the listing will be sent to the National Trails Day Office in Washington D.C., so that New Jersey will be included in the national tally of trail events.
Please submit any planned events sponsored by your park or group that will be taking place on a New Jersey trail during the Trails Day weekend, Saturday, June 2nd and Sunday, June 3rd.
Please submit your event information by completing the attached form as soon as possible, but no later than April 15th, so that it may be publicized statewide . If you need help planning an event, please browse the host materials here: https://www.trails50.org/event-hosting-guides.
We look forward to your participation in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System Act!
